A Crisp Autumn Day at Idylease Taken on Halloween — 2016<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

DAVID BANKS SICKELS<\/p>\n

David Banks Sickels (1837-1918) was a Civil War Correspondent, Fiscal Agent for the State of Arkansas, a Diplomatic Representative of Siam and Acting Consul of The Netherlands. With Lyman W. Griggs he founded the American Surety Company and upon his retirement, focused on literary work. He authored a prolific amount of poems, many of which were published in “Leaves of the Lotos” and “Flowers from the Wayside”.<\/p>\n

He authored this poem entitled ‘Idylease’ in 1909 while a guest of the hotel.<\/p>\n

We love to hear the wild birds greet<\/em>
\n At morn their comrades in the trees<\/em>
\n And feel the heart of nature beat<\/em>
\n With Joyous throbs at Idylease<\/em><\/p>\n

To gaze upon the pine-crowned hill,<\/em>
\n And watch the streamlets downward flow,<\/em>
\n From foaming falls and roaming rills.<\/em>
\n Along the steeps of Ramapo.<\/em><\/p>\n

To linger mid the shady scenes<\/em>
\n Where rest Invites the weary mind,<\/em>
\n And evil never Intervenes,<\/em>
\n For thoughts are pure and unconfined.<\/em><\/p>\n

To lie upon the dewless grass<\/em>
\n And view above the radiant sky.<\/em>
\n Then count the fleecy clouds that pass<\/em>
\n Like scenes before the dreamer’s eye.<\/em><\/p>\n

To mark the parent bird’s delight,<\/em>
\n As nestlings plume their eager wings,<\/em>
\n Intent upon their infant flight<\/em>
\n In quest of more etherial things,<\/em><\/p>\n

To muse o’er rocks and running rills,<\/em>
\n And trace Pequannock\u2019s whirls and bounds,<\/em>
\n Whose liquid laughter<\/em>
\n In the hills Fills all the air with soothing sounds.<\/em><\/p>\n

To walk the woods alone with God<\/em>
\n As Enoch did. unseen awhile.<\/em>
\n And know the paths our feet have trod<\/em>
\n Were lighted by his loving smile.<\/em><\/p>\n
