With Lyman W. Griggs he founded the American Surety Company and upon his retirement, focused on literary work. He authored a prolific amount of poems, many of which were published in &#8220;Leaves of the Lotos&#8221; and &#8220;Flowers from the Wayside&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He authored this poem entitled &#8216;Idylease&#8217; in 1909 while a guest of the hotel.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p><em>We love to hear the wild birds greet<\/em><br \/>\n<em> At morn their comrades in the trees<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And feel the heart of nature beat<\/em><br \/>\n<em> With Joyous throbs at Idylease<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>To gaze upon the pine-crowned hill,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And watch the streamlets downward flow,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> From foaming falls and roaming rills.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Along the steeps of Ramapo.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>To linger mid the shady scenes<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Where rest Invites the weary mind,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And evil never Intervenes,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> For thoughts are pure and unconfined.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>To lie upon the dewless grass<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And view above the radiant sky.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Then count the fleecy clouds that pass<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Like scenes before the dreamer&#8217;s eye.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>To mark the parent bird&#8217;s delight,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> As nestlings plume their eager wings,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Intent upon their infant flight<\/em><br \/>\n<em> In quest of more etherial things,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>To muse o&#8217;er rocks and running rills,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And trace Pequannock\u2019s whirls and bounds,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Whose liquid laughter<\/em><br \/>\n<em> In the hills Fills all the air with soothing sounds.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>To walk the woods alone with God<\/em><br \/>\n<em> As Enoch did. unseen awhile.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And know the paths our feet have trod<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Were lighted by his loving smile.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u2014David Banks Sickels (1837-1918)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DAVID BANKS SICKELS David Banks Sickels (1837-1918) was a Civil War Correspondent, Fiscal Agent for the State of Arkansas, a Diplomatic Representative of Siam and Acting Consul of The Netherlands.
